Why move from Facebook to Google+?

I came across an incredibly interesting post outlining reasons why you should move to Google+ from Facebook. I’ve been waiting for these types of posts for a couple days now and am thrilled to see then popping up.

I’ve been using Google+ for a while, but can’t say that I really have my mind around it, like I do Facebook, but I can see potential.

Anyway, here are the nine reasons as well as a link to the original website if you want a...

Google Announces the Google+ Project

Not to be confused with Google +1, Google+ is the search engine’s newest attempt at improving the social media networking experience. Google isn’t branding it as a social network, per say, but rather as a project.

According to Google:

“Among the most basic of human needs is the need to connect with others. With a smile, a laugh, a whisper or a cheer, we connect with others every single day. Today, the connections between...

Google launches Facebook rival

After a number of abortive attempts since 2009, Google has finally unveiled what it believes will be the service that anchors it as a major player in the world of social media, Google +.

It incorporates numerous sharing, networking and communication features; some new, though many that we’ve seen before, but represents what many have described as a solid start.

Currently open to users on an invite only basis, Google is referring to Google+ as a project, rather than a product, perhaps hinting at the...

Twitter Promoted Tweets to Enter User Streams

If you’ve seen The Social Network you may remember an exchange between Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg about monetizing the site. Eduardo believes that it’s time to start generating some revenue and Mark replies, “The Facebook is cool and if we start installing pop-ups for Mountain Dew it’s not gonna be cool.”

Who knows if this exact exchange even took place, but what we do know is that Mark changed his mind. While Facebook users might not see pop-up ads for Mountain Dew...

SMEs winning more new business through social media

Smaller companies are more effective than large brands when it comes to attracting business via social media, a new report has claimed. Industry analysts Regus, said that 42% of SMEs win business directly using channels like Facebook and Twitter, as opposed to 35% of firms with 250+ employees. Almost 10% more SMEs devote over 20% of their marketing budget to winning new customers through social media than their big business counterparts, the report said. Interestingly, Regus also said that...

5 Awesome & Inspiring Facebook Pages

I’ve spent a good amount of time reading up on Facebook Pages the last few weeks and I’ve come across some that I think are really great. Each of them has a reason for being great, but I’m not going to spoil it for you, so instead I’ll give you a quick look at each one and then you can decide if you want to explore further.

These 5 Facebook Pages are unrelated and there’s no common trend between them, expect for the fact that I think they’re highly effective and I think...

How about a game of Mini Maps?

I love it when brands get deeply engaged with social media, and Mini have managed to do this with the release of their Google Maps mashup game called Mini Maps. The premise is fairly simple, the game allows you to modify your virtual mini and then race against your friends all over the world, whilst tracking things on Google Maps.

The game looks like a lot of fun, so I’ve managed to track down a video for you to take a watch of and decide whether it’s something you’d like to play. What...

FourSquare hits 10 million members in 2 years!

Grief, it always amazes me at how quickly online networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and FourSquare have raced to having memberships of millions of users and in so little time!

FourSquare was created in 2009 by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai and in just over 2 years they have 10 million users, can you even imagine what that exponential growth must be like?

Social Media Lessons Learned from Anthony Weiner

If you’ve been following the news at all you should have heard about New York Congressman Anthony Weiner’s “sexting” scandal. The details of the scandal can be found easily on other sites so we won’t get into them, but Weiner has admitted (after initial hesitation) to engaging in inappropriate contact with six women over the course of three years through social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. While this certainly isn’t the first “oops” moment of...

Picture it: Photo Sharing with Instagram

When it comes to photo sharing social networks, Instagram is the most popular by far. It’s a photo sharing app for the iPhone that connects to Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare, among others. The premise of this app is to take photos, apply filters and optionally a tilt-shift effect and share it with friends.

You can view feeds of friends’ photos, like them and even comment on them. There’s also a Popular tab for viewing the most liked photos on Instagram, which provide inspiration to...

Social timing – part 1 [infographic]

Earlier today I blogged about When To Tweet?, which is a web application which connects to your Twitter account and looks at when your followers are most active, so that you have an idea when it’s best to send out a tweet if you’re looking for people to see it or interact with you. Really useful if you’re a marketer.

Twitter’s not the only place that has a science around timing, in fact, all social networks are like this and it’s nothing new to anything we know about. Just think...

When should you tweet?

People use Twitter for all sorts of reasons, to find new business, to make friend, to chat to friends, to find out news, to ask questions and as a marketing tool. There’s no best reason in my opinion, it’s up to you how you use it.

I use Twitter for all sorts of reasons, but because I run iMod and because I enjoy driving traffic to this blog, I use it to do just that, drive traffic. Now, there are so many things to take into account when...

How to increase ROI on PPC Facebook ads

A study from TBG Digital has suggested that advertisers can significantly boost ROI on Facebook advertising by incorporating social context into their campaigns.

TBG tested social context ads, which list friend endorsements, detailing which of the users friends ‘like’ the specific Facebook page, group, event, or application that’s advertised, against ads with no social context.

The study revealed that social context resulted in a 29% reduction in CPC for advertisers. The data came from a...

Social Media Timing Factors to Consider

One of the great things about using social media for marketing is that we have complete control over the message, including when it is sent. TV and radio advertising allows you to buy air time during a specific program, but it rarely allows you to determine the very minute when your ad will go live. It’s also much more expensive to purchase airtime during high volume periods, such as during TV prime time or radio morning drive hours.

The cost of using social media (mostly man hours) doesn’t...
