SEO Isn’t the First Priority for New Websites
Search engine optimization is obviously an important part of an online marketing strategy. It’s a smart idea to hire an SEO agency to handle the work for you, but for a new business with a new website it’s best to wait a few years. While you may be thinking, “An SEO company telling people to wait on hiring an SEO company? That doesn’t make sense”, hear us out.
Starting a new website, whether your company is established offline or not, is a huge undertaking. Many businesses just want to outsource everything from the start because they don’t have the time or the staff that can handle it. They immediately outsource the web design, content writing, and SEO because they simply don’t want to deal with it. Web design is crucial when starting a web site, so that should definitely be outsourced if you don’t have a web designer on staff. Not everybody has writing skills, so if you need someone to develop the content, by all means outsource that from the start as well. SEO on the other hand is a different animal. Hiring an SEO firm from day one doesn’t mean that you’ll see your search rankings improve by day five. In fact, it’s very likely that they won’t improve much by day 150 either. That’s why you need to get everything else in order before hiring an SEO firm to get the most out of the SEO campaign.
This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t think about SEO from the start. You certainly should, but on your own. In the first year or two of building your company and website it’s important to learn how to market in the online space, understand your place within the competition, and get a basic understanding of SEO. SEO isn’t brain surgery. Anyone can learn and implement the basics. Many people don’t want to take the time to do so if they can just hire someone, but working on your own SEO in the beginning will help you be a better business person, give you a broader understanding of your target audience, and make you a better SEO client when the time comes. This slow and steady thought process will help you be better long term.
Once your business is more established and your website has aged and established some search engine trust then it is time to hire an SEO company to really give it the extra boost that it needs. At this point, the website will be in a better position to succeed and you will get a lot more from the money that you spend on professional SEO services.
