Responsive navigation: Design ideas for your business

I’ve found that there are subtle ways of making your navigation so much more interesting, even just by adding a bit of colour. I’m usually pretty strict when it comes to adding a lot of colour to my navigation but through doing this research I am definitely going to try adding more with my next designs.

Why have brands taken so long to respond to responsive?

This year the world has seen shipment of tablets exceed that of the PC and it was also the year in which the smartphone dominated the US market by taking 64% of the market share (Nielson). So it may come as some surprise that that many of the UK’s leading brands are playing catch up when it comes to optimizing their site! A recent study by Venda showed that just one of the UK’s top visited retail sites (Curry’s) currently hosts a responsive site.

The crowd gets it right: The Asilomar name review

As a rule, our naming company doesn’t put much stock in crowd-sourcing as a means of naming companies and products. A group free-for-all isn’t likely to generate the kind of considered strategy and exhaustive, systematic creative process we’ve found most successful for brand naming. "Tiny" is relevant here because you have an important internal decision to make, one that many other companies are dealing with right now with budgets, short-term tactical implementation and long-term strategy. Should you have different product pages for smartphones and tablets?

The flavour of boring: Vanilla Air brand name review

All Nippon Airways (ANA), one of Japan’s largest airlines, has announced the renaming of its budget carrier Vanilla Air. And while the name may not be as bad as the names of former airlines Touch and Go, U-Land, and Ransome Airlines (yes, they all existed, I swear), Vanilla Air doesn’t exactly soar either. So what’s the rationale for this ultra-plain brand name?

Is hidden text using expandable sections bad for SEO?

In a recent video, Matt Cutts, the head of the web spam team at Google, shared some insight into a question that I’ve always wondered about. “Is hiding text in AJAX/JavaScript style expandable menus bad practice for SEO?” Expandable sections for content is common practice, especially on e-com sites that need to present large amounts of content in a format that is easier for the user to consume.
